The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned in the strongest and harshest terms the shooting that targeted the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) today, Sunday, March 15, 2026, in three separate incidents while they were carrying out regular patrols near their bases in Yater, Deir Kifa and Qalawayh, noting in a statement that “this dangerous and unacceptable attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a violation of international law and Security Council resolutions, noting that UNIFIL, under its mandate and in accordance with Security Council resolution 1701 (2006), has the right to take the necessary measures to defend itself and to resist any attempts to forcibly prevent it from carrying out its tasks.”
The Ministry expressed Lebanon's full and firm solidarity with UNIFIL, its leadership and its contributing countries, affirming Lebanon's deep appreciation for the essential role played by these forces in supporting peace, security and stability in southern Lebanon.
The Ministry also recalled the Cabinet’s decision issued on March 2, 2026, to ban Hezbollah’s military and security activities, deem them outlawed, and oblige it to surrender its weapons to the Lebanese state. She emphasizes that the government's decision in this regard is clear and unequivocal: any armed group outside the framework of the state will not be allowed to plunge Lebanon into chaos in the service of suspicious agendas.
The Lebanese state also affirmed its firm determination to impose its sovereignty over its entire territory and to confine arms to its legitimate institutions, to protect Lebanon and safeguard its security and the interests of its people.
